【3rd week 08/07/17 – 15/07/17】

The weather in England is very interesting. The first day of school, the teacher told us, “If you don't like the weather, wait a minute. It will surely change!” I didn’t understand what he meant, but now I get it. Now I take my umbrella everywhere I go.

This weekend, one of my dreams, “Visiting London”, has come true. The amount of people was more than I expected, but I was really fascinated by the beautiful sights. Also, I can’t help thinking of the stories which are related to the places in London. When I saw Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace, I could see small Tanuki. And I could see Peter Pan when I saw Big Ben, although it was being repaired. I really appreciated my friend guiding me around London. I think you could change your subject at university to tourism!

Anyway, this week, I don’t know why but I really want to eat Japanese food, so I had ramen, which my Japanese colleagues gave to me. How delicious Japanese ramen is! I saw many Sushi-bar in London, so maybe I should try some during this stay.

こちらの天気は面白い。「天気が嫌だなと思ったら、少し待ってみて。すぐ変わるから！」学校の初日に先生がこう言っていて、そのときはどういうことよと思っていたけど、数週間経ってなるほどと思いました。急に降って急に止む。どこに行くにしても絶対折り畳み傘を持ち歩いてます。

先週末、やっとロンドンに行けました。人の多さは尋常じゃなかったけど、風景や建物がやっぱりすごかった！そしてやっぱり、その場所に関わる色んな物語を思い出さずにはいられませんでした。バッキンガム宮殿で衛兵の交代を見た時は小さいタヌキが見えたし、ビッグベンを見たときは時計盤の辺りにピーターパンが見えました。一緒に行った友達に「ピーターパン飛んでそうだよね！」言ったら苦笑されました。そしてビッグベンは絶賛修理工事中でした。

ロンドンのあちこちを紹介して連れてってくれたスイスの友達に本当に感謝。

そして今週、なぜかすごく日本食が食べたくなって、同僚の先生方がくれたうまかっちゃん食べたら涙が出るほどおいしかったです。なんて素敵な食べ物だラーメンって。すし屋さんをちらほら見かけるので、近々挑戦しようと思います。

【Words & Phrases】

(形)scruffy：「小汚い」。今週なぜか色んな授業で登場する形容詞。

(名)width：「幅」。し、舌が…！

(形)sceptical：「疑い深い」。suspicious「疑わしい」と一緒に登場。例えば、「a sceptical boy」は「疑い深い男の子」で男の子が何かを疑う。一方「a suspicious boy」は「疑わしい男の子」で周囲等が男の子を疑う。自分の為にメモ。

(形)devastated：「非常にショックで悲しい」。Wimbledonでナダルが負けたのはdevastatedだね…とスペインの生徒がぽつり。

(代)whatever：「どうでもいいけどね」。曖昧な雰囲気を出せる。もともと「何でも／何かそんな物」という意味の複合代名詞だけど、単品で会話の最後に付け加えて言うのをよく耳にします。

下から見ると工事感がすごい。

たまたまバッキンガム宮殿を通り過ぎようとしたらパレードが始まりそうだったので

入ってくるところだけを見ました。笑

とにかく混んでいる。。。
