【9th week 19/08/17 – 25/08/17】

A previous day, in my class, we talked about cultural differences. And it was so interesting, especially about “toilets.”

I didn’t realize, but Japanese toilets might be interesting and weird for people in other countries. For example, we have many buttons, and apparently they make people confused. Also, they were surprised at “Otohime.” They might feel curious why Japanese care so much about this, but I told them this is a culture. I like James Corden who is a famous actor and a host of a British TV program “The Late Late Show,” and he mentioned our toilets in his program as well! It’s interesting to see our culture from another point of view.

On the topic of culture, people often say “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.” I’d say it’s true. Getting used to another culture is not so easy, especially for food. I really loved coffee and I used to drink iced coffee in Japan. However, sadly, since I came here, I haven’t had tasty coffee. Surprisingly, some cafes don’t have iced coffee, even though they are “cafe”!

One day I told my host mother about it. Then she said, “I know coffee is delicious, but I recommend you English tea, especially with fish & chips!” And that dinner, we ate fish & chips with milk tea. Unexpectedly, that combination was absolutely wonderful, and I’ve realized that I didn’t have to be so restricted to coffee. Now I try to drink tea ( I prefer hot milk tea! ) when I go to cafes here.

Therefore, I’ve experienced that “When in England, drink tea as a British drink!”

この前授業で文化の違いの話になりました。面白かったのが、トイレの違いについて。

どうも日本のトイレは他の国の人からすると面白い＆奇妙なようで。私たちには当たり前のボタンが、「複雑すぎる！」とのこと。更に音姫の説明をしたら「気にし過ぎでしょ！」と…でもこれが文化。笑　イギリスのテレビ番組で有名なジェームス・コーデンも、番組の中で日本のトイレにツッコミをいれてました。ぜひ日本に来て体験してほしい。笑

文化というくくりで言えば、「郷に入っては郷に従え」はやはり一理あると思う今日この頃。元々コーヒーが大好きで夏はアイスコーヒーばかり飲んでいたけど、こちらに来てからしっくりくるコーヒーに全く出会えず。スタバに行っても「今日は寒いからアイスコーヒーないの」と言われる始末。。

このことをホストマザーに話したら、「コーヒーも良いけどやっぱりお茶おすすめよ♪特にフィッシュ＆チップスにはミルクティーが一番！」ということでその日の夜この組み合わせを試してみるとめちゃくちゃ美味しくて。コーヒーにこだわらなくても良いかと思ってからはもうお茶を飲むようにしてます。笑　ミルクティー（砂糖少なめ）が好きです。

何もかも郷に従う必要はないと思うけど、そこでしかできないことにはチャレンジしてみるべきだなぁと思いました。もうすぐホリデーなので、学校も頑張ろう！

：ステイ先の18歳の女の子とその友達と話してて、聞き取れなかったのがこれ。この文章を、ものすごい速さでものすごくつなげて言ってくれるのでもはや “German, French, Korea?” に聞こえてしまった。日本語表記だと「ジャバニフレクリア？」といった感じに。次の日学校でこの話をすると、「Do you」は「ジュ」、「Did you」は「デジュ」と繋がるのと、Information words

（文の中で大事な情報が含まれる名詞）意外のanyやらinは気持ちくらいしか発音しないからそう聞こえたんだね〜という話に。これを自然に言えるまでにはまだ時間がかかりそう。。
